Recycling Washington DC -The DPW gathers recyclables on a weekly basis from individual homes and apartments with three or less living units. To simplify the process, the DPW provides “combined” recycling where all recyclable materials can be placed together in a single container. For commercial properties in the District, it is mandatory for apartment buildings with four or more units, mixed-use residential/commercial buildings, and commercial properties to have their own recycling collection services. It is important for recyclables to be both clean and empty. Do not put them in bags; instead, place them loosely in the bin. Be sure to also flatten any cardboard boxes before recycling. Items such as plastic bags, clothing, tanglers (such as cables and cords), electronics, and batteries should not be included in the recycling bin. Recyclables should not be bagged.
